Wildfire Along New York-New Jersey Border Continues to Spread

A significant wildfire is currently ravaging a sprawling area of hilly forest along the New York-New Jersey border, persisting in its growth even after the region experienced its first substantial rainfall in nearly six weeks. Fire officials reported on Monday that despite the precipitation, which amounted to just a quarter of an inch, the dry conditions and gusty winds of up to 40 miles per hour forecasted for Tuesday pose an increased risk for the fire’s expansion.

As of Monday evening, more than 3,500 acres were engulfed in flames across both New Jersey and New York, with expectations that the total area affected could surpass 5,000 acres. This alarming figure translates to nearly eight square miles, roughly one-third the size of Manhattan. A spokesperson from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection indicated that only about 20 percent of the New Jersey section of the fire had been contained, while details regarding the containment status in New York remained unclear.

According to Christopher Franek, an assistant division fire warden for the New Jersey Forest Fire Service, the recent rain has only temporarily hindered the wildfire’s progress. “We’re throwing everything we’ve got at it,” he stated, emphasizing the challenging conditions faced by the firefighters. “A lot of manual labor is choking on smoke and dust.”
