Uruguay’s Presidential Election Heads to a Second Round
In a significant political event, Uruguay’s presidential election has advanced to a second round of voting that is scheduled for November 24. The initial voting results indicated that Yamandú Orsi, a well-respected former mayor and history teacher, outperformed his opponent from the ruling center-right coalition, Álvaro Delgado, who currently serves as the chief of staff to the sitting president.
With over 80 percent of the votes tallied, both candidates addressed their supporters, expressing their anticipation for the upcoming runoff. Exit polls suggested that Mr. Orsi garnered between 42 percent and 44 percent of the votes, which placed him in a favorable position but did not meet the necessary 50 percent threshold for an outright victory. Mr. Delgado, on the other hand, received approximately 27 percent to 28 percent of the votes, showcasing the competitive nature of the election.
Yamandú Orsi is affiliated with the center-left Broad Front alliance, a political coalition that held the presidency from 2005 to 2019. His campaign has resonated with voters who are advocating for a more robust social safety net, especially in a country known to be one of the most expensive in Latin America. Orsi’s leadership style and focus on social issues have made him a prominent figure in Uruguayan politics.
“We are gearing up for these 27 days of campaigning,” he declared passionately to a large gathering of supporters in Montevideo, the nation’s capital, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming weeks as they prepare for the decisive vote.
