Universal Orlando Resort’s Epic Universe: A New Era Begins
When the Universal Orlando Resort debuted its first Harry Potter attractions in June 2010, the response was overwhelming. Fans braved six-hour lines in sweltering 90-degree heat just to step inside the gates. The immense demand outpaced all expectations for months, leading to a chaotic experience for some visitors, many of whom swore they would never go through that ordeal again.
In an effort to avoid similar logistical challenges with the opening of its highly anticipated theme park, Universal Epic Universe, on May 22, the resort has implemented a strategic approach. Initially, tickets will be available exclusively as part of multiday packages, ensuring a smoother experience for the general public. This marks the first significant theme park addition in Orlando, Florida, in 26 years, and Universal aims to make the launch as seamless as possible.
The most affordable package will be priced between $352 and $521, depending on the selected dates. This will grant visitors one-day access to Epic Universe and two additional days at the resort’s existing parks. These packages are set to go on sale on Tuesday. Universal has also announced that more ticket options, including single-day admissions for the grand-opening period, will be offered in the coming months. Notably, current annual passholders will have the opportunity to purchase single-day tickets to Epic Universe starting on October 24.
According to research firm MoffettNathanson, Epic Universe is projected to draw approximately 10 million visitors in its first full year of operation. Universal is keen to mitigate congestion and ensure that guests—many of whom may be experiencing the resort for the first time—leave with a desire to return. The emphasis on multiday packages underscores Universal’s goal of positioning itself as a weeklong destination for families, rather than merely a brief addition to a Disney-centric vacation.
Comcast, the parent company of Universal Parks, has invested billions of dollars into the development of Epic Universe. This expansive park will feature an impressive 70 acres dedicated to attractions, dining, and shopping experiences. To put this into perspective, the Harry Potter area that opened in 2010 encompassed just 20 acres. Visitors can look forward to major attractions inspired by beloved franchises, including Nintendo video games, “How to Train Your Dragon,” classic movie monsters, and, of course, more magical experiences from the Harry Potter universe. The expansion will also introduce three new hotels to accommodate guests.
As Craig Moffett, co-founder of MoffettNathanson, noted in a recent report, “Epic Universe signals a new phase in the theme park wars.” He estimated that Universal could attract around one million visitors away from the larger Disney World from mid-2025 through the end of 2026, marking a significant shift in the competitive landscape of theme parks.
