UN Secretary General Faces Criticism for Attending BRICS Summit in Kazan

UN Secretary General’s Controversial Attendance at BRICS Summit in Kazan

The UN Secretary General has arrived in Kazan, Russia, to participate in a contentious summit of developing nations that includes prominent members such as China and Iran. His decision to engage in this meeting, hosted by Russian President Vladimir Putin, has sparked significant criticism from Ukraine and its allies, especially in light of the ongoing conflict that has escalated since the full-scale invasion in 2022.

In a statement shared on social media platform X, the Ukrainian foreign affairs ministry expressed discontent, stating, “This is a wrong choice that does not advance the cause of peace. It only damages the UN’s reputation.” They highlighted the irony of Guterres’ attendance, noting that he had previously declined an invitation to a peace summit in Switzerland earlier this year, which was initiated by Ukraine.

Additionally, the foreign minister of Lithuania, known for his hardline stance against Russia, condemned Guterres’ involvement, labeling it as “unacceptable.”

The summit, officially known as the BRICS Summit, originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, but has recently expanded to include countries such as Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. This year’s gathering is set to take place over several days in Kazan, Russia.

According to Stewart Patrick, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, Guterres may be positioning himself to facilitate a potential peace agreement and could share some of the BRICS nations’ concerns regarding the inclusivity and representativeness of international institutions. However, Patrick cautioned that such actions would likely not be well received in Western capitals, as it could be interpreted as lending legitimacy to Vladimir Putin’s policies. In an interview with Euronews on Tuesday, he articulated these concerns.

As of now, spokespeople for Guterres have not responded to media inquiries regarding his participation in the summit.
