Trump’s Embrace of Crude Rhetoric and Gender Politics in the 2024 Campaign

Trump’s Evolving Rhetoric and Gender Politics

As the 2016 presidential campaign drew to a close, the public was introduced to the infamous ā€œAccess Hollywoodā€ tape, where Donald Trump boasted about his ability to grope women without consequence. In the aftermath, he issued an apology, characterizing his remarks as mere ā€œlocker room talk.ā€ However, the narrative has shifted significantly since then.

Today, rather than retreating from his previous vulgarities, Trump has chosen to fully embrace them. He appears unconcerned about how his crude behavior might affect his standing with women, particularly younger voters. Instead of attempting to bridge the gender gap, he is leaning into it, using the concept of “locker room politics” as the foundation for his closing arguments.

For months, Trump has waged a brash and offensive campaign against Vice President Kamala Harris. He has relentlessly shared crude remarks about her on social media, allegedly using an expletive to describe her in private discussions, and has publicly belittled her intelligence by labeling her as ā€œstupid.ā€

At a recent rally, he remarked, ā€œWe canā€™t stand you, youā€™re a shit vice president,ā€ shortly after sharing an unrelated anecdote about the size of the late golfer Arnold Palmerā€™s penis. This type of derogatory language is not new for Trump. Back in 2016, when responding to a jab from Marco Rubio, he infamously quipped, ā€œHe referred to my hands: ā€˜If theyā€™re small, something else must be small.ā€™ I guarantee you thereā€™s no problem.ā€

Trumpā€™s strategy seems clear: to galvanize his base by appealing to a brand of masculinity that dismisses decorum and embraces a more primal, aggressive form of communication.
