Trump’s Conversation with Zelensky and Musk

On Wednesday, President-elect Donald J. Trump engaged in a notable conversation with Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky. During this pivotal call, Trump also handed the phone to Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur who has increasingly become a key figure in supporting Ukraine’s communication efforts amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. Sources familiar with the discussion indicated that the nature of their conversation remains unclear, particularly regarding any potential shifts in U.S. policy toward Ukraine following Trump’s election.

Musk was present at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s private club and residence in Florida, when the call took place. The atmosphere of the conversation was reportedly described as positive, according to individuals informed about the exchange. A second source corroborated Musk’s involvement, a detail that had previously been reported by Axios. However, a spokesperson for Trump did not immediately respond to requests for comments regarding the call.

Mr. Trump has expressed intentions to swiftly resolve the ongoing conflict, a stance interpreted by many as a willingness to allow Russia to retain control over the territories it has occupied since its invasion of Ukraine back in 2022. During a recent presidential debate, Trump notably refrained from explicitly endorsing either side in the war and has criticized Zelensky for receiving substantial military and financial assistance from the Biden administration.

Elon Musk, who has developed a close rapport with Trump in recent months, has played a crucial role in the Ukrainian war effort through his Starlink satellite communications network. His support has included not only financial backing for Trump’s presidential campaign but also substantial logistical assistance. Musk is also recognized as a significant contractor for the U.S. government, particularly for the Pentagon, which depends heavily on SpaceX for its launch capabilities. He has reportedly expressed interest in placing some of his employees in government positions once Trump assumes office, and Trump has indicated a desire for Musk to contribute ideas on streamlining government expenditures.

Upon Trump being declared the winner of the presidential race on Wednesday morning, President Zelensky reached out to urge Trump to bolster Ukraine’s defenses against Russian aggression. In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Zelensky emphasized the importance of Trump’s leadership for Ukraine and Europe. He stated, “For us in Ukraine, and all across Europe, it has always been crucial to hear the words of the then 45th President of the United States about ‘peace through strength.’” Zelensky expressed hope that this principle would guide the policies of the incoming 47th President, benefiting both America and the global community.

Zelensky further remarked, “It’s no coincidence that Ronald Reagan is mentioned so often these days—people want confidence, they want freedom, they want a normal life. For us, that means a life free from Russian aggression, with a strong America, a strong Ukraine, and strong allies.”

The conversation with Zelensky was just one of many discussions Trump held with foreign leaders in the days following his electoral victory.
