Trial of Gisèle Pelicot: A Beacon for Change in the Fight Against Sexual Violence

Trial of Gisèle Pelicot: A Call for Change

On a day that mirrored many others at the courthouse in Avignon, France, Gisèle Pelicot was greeted by the enthusiastic cheers of a predominantly female crowd as she arrived for her trial on Wednesday. “I express neither my anger nor my shame,” she declared to the court, once again taking the stand in a case that has captivated the nation and ignited profound conversations about sexual violence and the complexities of the legal definition of rape. “I am expressing a desire to change society.”

For several weeks, Ms. Pelicot had chosen to remain silent while one defendant after another presented their testimonies before the judges. A total of 51 men are facing trial, with most charged with aggravated rape against Ms. Pelicot, a 71-year-old grandmother. Prosecutors allege that she was repeatedly drugged by her husband of 50 years, who then served her up to these men. During the assaults, she was left unconscious, leading to significant health issues, including memory lapses, hair loss, and weight fluctuations.

As she spoke to the court on Wednesday, Ms. Pelicot shared that listening to the harrowing testimonies over the past weeks had caused her to feel violated all over again. Yet, she expressed a newfound sense of purpose: “I want victims of rape to tell themselves, ‘If Ms. Pelicot did it, so can we.’ I refuse to let victims feel shame; it is the perpetrators who should bear that burden,” she emphasized, directing her words towards the defendants.

In September, Dominique Pelicot, her ex-husband, recounted to the court how he had begun drugging his wife to engage in sexual acts that she would never consent to while in her right mind. He confessed to meeting other men through an online platform and inviting them to participate in these heinous acts. This disturbing pattern continued for nearly a decade until his arrest in September 2020, when he was caught filming upskirt videos of women in a grocery store.

Upon his arrest, the police confiscated various electronic devices, including his laptop, which ultimately led to the discovery of a chilling collection of photographs and videos depicting Ms. Pelicot being sexually assaulted. Throughout their investigation, law enforcement identified over 80 potential suspects but managed to locate and charge only 50 of them.
