It is with a heavy heart that we report the tragic death of FC Cincinnati midfielder Marco Angulo, who passed away at the young age of 22. This devastating news comes just five weeks after he sustained severe injuries in a car accident that occurred on October 7 in the capital city of Ecuador.
Angulo was currently on loan to the Ecuadorian club LDU Quito for the season when he was involved in a horrific crash that resulted in the vehicle colliding with a metal structure on the motorway. After battling for his life in a local hospital for 35 days, he succumbed to his injuries.
FC Cincinnati released an emotional statement expressing their sorrow: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Marco—a husband and father, a brother and son, a friend and teammate. He was a joyful, kind young man who lit up every room he entered. Our entire club grieves this tragedy, and we are thinking of and praying for his family. He was a cherished member of the FC Cincinnati family, and he will be missed.”
Angulo was one of five individuals in the car at the time of the accident, and he is sadly the third person to lose their life due to this incident. The other victims included Roberto Cabezas Simisterra, a full-back for Independiente Juniors, and Victor Charcopa Nazareno.
In a heartfelt tribute, LDU Quito stated: “It is with profound pain and sadness that we bring you the news of the death of our player, Marco Angulo. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. His departure is an irreparable loss that will leave an indelible mark on our hearts. May he rest in peace.”
Angulo proudly represented his country, having been capped three times by the Ecuadorian national team. The Ecuadorian Football Federation emphasized in their statement that “he was not only a great player but also a great teammate.”
Beginning his career at Independiente Juniors in Ecuador, Angulo subsequently joined Independiente del Valle before making his way to FC Cincinnati, where he signed a contract that extended through 2025. He made a total of 30 first-team appearances for the MLS club prior to his loan to LDU Quito this season. His last match for the team took place on October 6, where he made one of his 18 appearances.
Marco Angulo leaves behind his loving wife and young son, who will undoubtedly feel the impact of this tragic loss.
