Tragic Fuel Tanker Accident in Northern Nigeria
On a fateful Tuesday night, a driver of a fuel tanker was navigating the dimly lit roads of northern Nigeria, transporting a substantial load of 45,000 liters of gasoline. Suddenly, a van carrying tomatoes unexpectedly veered into his lane, forcing the tanker driver, Yusuf Mohammad, to swerve in a desperate attempt to avoid a collision. Unfortunately, his evasive maneuver caused the tanker to capsize.
Miraculously, both Yusuf and the van driver emerged from the incident unscathed. However, the situation quickly escalated as hundreds of local residents, drawn by the sight of the overturned tanker and the precious gasoline spilling onto the ground, rushed to collect the fuel. In Nigeria, where gasoline has become increasingly costly and hard to come by, this decision would prove catastrophic.
Tragedy struck an hour later when the tanker exploded, claiming the lives of 168 individuals in the state of Jigawa, as reported by emergency officials. This incident stands as one of the deadliest road accidents in Nigeria’s history. As of Thursday evening, over 90 people remained hospitalized due to their injuries.
In the days following the disaster, mourners gathered to pay their respects in the vicinity of Majia, a town located about 70 miles from Kano, Nigeria’s second-largest city. A somber atmosphere enveloped the area where many of the victims had been laid to rest. The remnants of the burned tanker, now blackened and covered in soot, lay just yards away from the burial site and the charred fields of sorghum, serving as a haunting reminder of the tragic events that unfolded that night.
