Tom Holland’s Journey to Sobriety and Launch of Non-Alcoholic Beer Brand Bero

Tom Holland’s Journey to Sobriety

Tom Holland, the renowned Spider-Man actor, embraced Dry January in 2022, a viral initiative promoted by Alcohol Change UK that encourages individuals in the UK to abstain from alcohol for the entire month. This experience proved to be transformative for the 28-year-old star, who candidly shared his realization of how significantly alcohol had influenced his life. Holland reflected, “It’s a pretty generic story. I was drinking too much. I was the type of person that, when I’d have one beer, I couldn’t just have one beer. I knew I’d had a bit of a problem for a while,” during an interview with Forbes about the launch of his new venture.

Finding Dry January surprisingly challenging, Holland decided to extend his commitment through February. He recounted, “February was no easier. Then I did March, and I sort of said to myself, look, if I can do six months without drinking, I get to June 1, which is my birthday, and I would have proved to myself that I don’t have a problem.” When his birthday arrived, Holland felt a renewed sense of vitality and well-being, inspiring him to eliminate alcohol from his life permanently. “It was very difficult; it has been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, and arguably the greatest achievement of my life. I’m very proud to be sober today,” he admitted.

Now, over two years since making that life-altering decision, Holland has launched a non-alcoholic beer brand named Bero, collaborating with the brewery Grant Wood. The brewing process involves using a special maltose-negative yeast, which allows the beer to ferment in the traditional manner without the maltose sugars activating the yeast to produce alcohol. Currently, Bero offers three unique non-alcoholic beers: Kingston Golden Pils, Edge Hill Hazy IPA, and Noon Wheat. The first two varieties are a nod to Holland’s roots in south London.

While the non-alcoholic beer market still has considerable room for growth compared to its alcoholic counterpart, it is a steadily expanding sector. Last year, the global market was valued at approximately €31.5 billion, with projections indicating continued growth. It’s not uncommon for celebrities to launch their own alcohol brands; for example, Snoop Dogg has his wine, Ryan Reynolds created his gin, and Kendall Jenner introduced her tequila. However, Holland’s initiative stands out as a notable example of a teetotal celebrity founding a non-alcoholic brand. He joins the ranks of other stars like Kylie Minogue, who has her No Alcohol Sparkling Rosé, a counterpart to her immensely popular alcoholic Prosecco Rosé.
