The Splendid Transformation of Anjula Acharia’s Diwali Celebration

The Evolution of Anjula Acharia’s Diwali Celebration

Fifteen years ago, Anjula Acharia hosted a cozy Diwali gathering in her TriBeCa apartment, inviting around 40 close friends and family to partake in the vibrant festival of lights. Having grown up in Buckinghamshire, England, she cherished the traditions of Diwali and wanted to share that joy with her friends in New York City.

Ms. Acharia, an accomplished entrepreneur and the manager of renowned actress Priyanka Chopra, has continued this cherished tradition almost every year since its inception. Initially celebrated in her apartment or at a friend’s home, the event took a significant leap in 2019 when it was hosted at the prestigious Pierre Hotel.

Now known as the All That Glitters Diwali Ball, the event has transformed into a splendid spectacle, becoming one of the most prominent Diwali celebrations in the United States. It attracts a dazzling array of South Asian musicians, influential politicians, celebrated fashion designers, and leading business executives.

“It’s just gotten bigger and better,” Ms. Acharia remarked, reflecting on the growth of the event. She recalled a time five years ago when securing sponsors for décor and catering was a challenge. “Now, we’ve had a battle for sponsors,” she added with a smile, highlighting the increasing interest and support for the celebration.

This past Saturday, approximately 300 guests gracefully descended the grand staircase of the Pierre, adorned in their most exquisite South Asian attire, with many donning sparkling wedding lehengas. The atmosphere was electric as Punjabi music reverberated throughout the venue.

Among the illustrious attendees were comedian Hasan Minhaj, who happily posed for photos with actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and the talented singer-songwriter Ali Sethi, who engaged in lively conversation with Avantika Vandanapu, a star of the upcoming film Mean Girls (2024). The evening was a true celebration of culture, community, and the spirit of Diwali.
