The Simpsons: A Nostalgic Lens on the Future

Let’s be real – relaxation is a rare commodity these days. With the US election just hours away and the candidates neck and neck, achieving a state of zen feels nearly impossible, especially while keeping a close eye on the polling updates. However, some might find a peculiar sense of comfort in pondering a question that has lingered for decades: Can The Simpsons genuinely predict the future? This iconic animated sitcom has gained a reputation for its uncanny ability to foreshadow real-life events, with several episodes and gags striking a chord with reality.

Many fans choose to interpret these instances as a bizarre form of “prediction.” Regardless of personal beliefs, it’s hard to ignore the eyebrow-raising moments where art seems to imitate life. Here are some notable examples:

  • The 1990 episode where characters protested the nudity of Michelangelo’s “David,” which eerily mirrored a real-life incident when a Florida school forced the resignation of its principal over complaints regarding a lesson that featured the statue.
  • In the 1994 episode titled ‘Lisa vs. Malibu Stacy,’ the show appeared to forecast the Barbie frenzy linked to the release of Greta Gerwig’s film, along with Donald Trump’s indictment.
  • 1996’s ‘Homerpalooza’ humorously suggested that the hip-hop group Cypress Hill would share a stage with the London Symphony Orchestra – a scenario that materialized this year.
  • The 1998 episode that accurately predicted Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox.

Yet, perhaps the most infamous instance of foresight came from the 2000 episode ‘Bart to the Future,’ which mentioned Donald Trump as the President of the United States. In this episode, Lisa, who becomes president, remarks: “As you know, we’ve inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump.” This episode gained renewed attention the week after Trump became the 45th President in 2017, when the show’s recurring chalkboard gag humorously stated: “Being right sucks.” This prediction proved alarmingly accurate, as Trump’s presidency oversaw one of the highest deficit increases in history.

The episode went viral again when Kamala Harris made history as the first female US Vice President; Lisa was seen wearing a strikingly familiar purple suit, complete with pearl accessories. Now, as Trump announces his 2024 presidential run, the same year that The Simpsons originally predicted, fans are once again speculating about the show’s prophetic abilities.

Many are now inclined to believe that the episode’s established predictive prowess indicates Kamala Harris may emerge victorious in the upcoming election. Social media has erupted with comments like: “We all know that The Simpsons has this uncanny ability to predict the future. In one episode, Lisa becomes president, sporting a purple suit and pearls, just like Kamala Harris during her inauguration. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!” Another user added, “The Simpsons predict Kamala Harris will be President.” One more chimed in, “If The Simpsons ever really predicted the future, let it be this time!”

As we draw closer to the election day, it remains to be seen whether there truly are more things in Heaven and Earth than are dreamt of in the philosophy of Matt Groening, the creator of The Simpsons. Perhaps this time, the chalkboard will read: “Being right rocks!”
