In the aftermath of the devastating attacks on October 7, it has often felt as if the fabric of America, already frayed, might unravel completely. Yet, during this tumultuous time, a remarkably diverse coalition of Americans—Jews, Muslims, Arabs, and Blacks—have come together in their shared affection for Samantha Woll, a passionate advocate for social justice and the president of the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue in Detroit. Tragically, she was discovered deceased outside her residence on October 21, 2023, the victim of a heinous crime.

Samantha, or Sam as we affectionately knew her, was not just a classmate; she was a cherished friend. Following her untimely death, an outpouring of shock and grief flooded my phone from countless individuals who knew her well. “Someone murdered our friend,” one of them poignantly expressed, encapsulating the sentiment of many. She was only 40 years old.

As I prepare to cast my vote for Kamala Harris this November, it is not just a political choice; it is deeply personal. It is a tribute to Sam.

Many have lovingly referred to Sam as a “bridge builder,” which perfectly encapsulates her tireless efforts to foster connections between Jewish and Muslim communities in Detroit. Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan, a proud Palestinian American, called Sam not only a “friend” but also a “deeply loved member of our social justice community.”
