The Resilience of Kamala Harris Amidst Scrutiny

It is undoubtedly challenging to maintain composure under the relentless glare of public scrutiny, especially when faced with an opposition bent on undermining your integrity, competence, and achievements. Yet, whether one views it as grace, poise, or sheer dignity, Kamala Harris has consistently made a compelling case for her candidacy since President Biden endorsed her as his successor on the Democratic ticket. Consider this: no presidential nominees in recent history have encountered such a blatant assault on the authenticity of their identity, which in turn calls into question their qualifications for the highest office in the land.

Speaking from experience, the myriad of racist, misogynistic, and sexist insults directed at Ms. Harris must be incredibly painful. They serve as a stark reminder of the disgraceful tactics employed by certain Republican senators when I challenged Clarence Thomas’s suitability for a position on the Supreme Court. What kept me grounded during that tumultuous time was the knowledge that I was not the first woman to have my sanity, truthfulness, and character publicly questioned. Even now, when I find myself under attack, my mother’s firm yet gentle words resonate in my mind: “You know who you are and what you can do.” The lesson I learned is profound: Never allow those who harbor disdain for you to define your worth.

A crucial strategy for enduring such immense pressure is to wholeheartedly embrace the value of your skills and principles. As Ms. Harris aptly stated this year, “Don’t be confined to other people’s perception about what this looks like, and how you should act in order to be.” This mindset is clearly reflected in the clarity and confidence with which she articulates her qualifications for the presidency. During a recent debate, Ms. Harris adeptly highlighted Donald Trump’s vulnerabilities without stooping to his level, thereby showcasing her dignified strength. She confidently asserted her understanding of “Donald Trump’s type,” and demonstrated her point without resorting to self-aggrandizement.

One significant aspect of Vice President Harris’s dignity lies in her unwavering belief in the right of all individuals to be treated with respect. Consider the remark from Republican Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who stated, “My kids keep me humble. Unfortunately, Kamala Harris doesn’t have anything keeping her humble.” This awkward attempt to alienate Ms. Harris from women with children fell flat. In response, Ms. Harris reaffirmed her commitment to valuing all women by expressing her heartfelt love for being a stepmother to two children. She also reminded us that women frequently face scrutiny regarding our perceived shortcomings and limitations—regardless of whether we have children.

By remaining authentic to herself and refusing to be rattled by personal attacks, Ms. Harris exemplifies how to safeguard and nurture one’s self-worth. I share this because I have seen how maintaining composure under pressure can inspire others. Following my departure from Washington, D.C., after the grueling Senate committee questioning regarding my truthfulness, my only solace was the knowledge that I had done my best. Since then, I have received countless messages from individuals expressing how inspired they were by my grace, prompting them to reclaim their dignity by sharing their own stories of harassment and abuse.

To be candid, the terms “dignity” and similar concepts are often laden with implications. We seldom engage in discussions about men’s grace, particularly within the political realm. This conversation tends to be reserved for women, possibly because a man’s suitability for leadership is generally taken for granted, while a woman must consistently demonstrate her competence to lead. In today’s political landscape, attributes such as hubris, deceit, anger, fearmongering, and personal grievances are wielded and accepted as indicators of power, confidence, and capability. Instead, equanimity is often preyed upon as a sign of weakness.
