Steve Garvey Cheers at Dodger Stadium While Adam Schiff Campaigns
On a vibrant Friday night, former Major League Baseball icon Steve Garvey, who is now a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in California, found himself amidst the excitement of Dodger Stadium. He was there to support his beloved Los Angeles Dodgers as they faced the formidable New York Yankees in the opening game of the World Series. Meanwhile, his Democratic opponent, Representative Adam Schiff, known for his pivotal role as the lead investigator during Donald J. Trump’s first impeachment, experienced the game from a distance. He caught the thrilling finale—the history-making walk-off grand slam that ultimately led the Dodgers to victory—while at a bar in Phoenix airport.
Earlier that day, Schiff had been actively campaigning in Arizona, rallying support for Vice President Kamala Harris and Representative Ruben Gallego, the Democratic nominee for the Senate. As he awaited his flight to Las Vegas, excitement about the Dodgers’ win lingered. “I’m a lifelong Dodger fan and I absolutely despise the Yankees. Last night’s game was a grand slam in every conceivable way,” Schiff exclaimed, energizing volunteers at the Nevada State A.F.L.-C.I.O. headquarters before they set out to knock on doors. “I am here to ensure we achieve a grand slam of our own in Nevada.”
In a state as predominantly blue as California, Schiff has established a significant lead over Garvey, a political newcomer hoping to capitalize on nostalgia for his days as a Dodgers first baseman, coupled with public concerns regarding the economy, homelessness, and immigration. However, his attempts to gain traction have not resulted in the anticipated support. This has allowed Schiff to leverage his notoriety as a prominent opponent of Trump, along with a robust campaign war chest, to assist a variety of potential Senate colleagues well beyond his own ballot.
In addition to his efforts in Nevada, Schiff has made stops supporting Senator Jacky Rosen and has participated in events in Arizona alongside Mr. Gallego. His campaign trail has also taken him to New Mexico for Senator Martin Heinrich, to Pennsylvania for Senator Bob Casey, and to Ohio for Senator Sherrod Brown.
