A Unique Steelers Experience in Dublin
Last month, Shane De Lappe and Stephen Murphy arrived at Dublin’s iconic Croke Park about an hour before the stadium gates swung open. Their excitement, however, didn’t stem from the prospect of watching Gaelic football or hurling matches. Instead, they were there for a sold-out watch party hosted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
As the anticipation built, the two 30-something dads prepared to indulge in a quintessential American game day experience. Soon, they would be inside the stadium, savoring delicious wings, hot dogs, and tater tots, all washed down with pints of the finest Guinness. The highlight of the day would be a live telecast of the Steelers going head-to-head with the Colts in Indianapolis.
While the N.F.L. has only ventured to Ireland once for a preseason game in 1997, the devoted Steelers fans found solace in gathering with over 800 like-minded enthusiasts, all waving their Terrible Towels in unison. For De Lappe and Murphy, the ultimate goal remains a journey to the United States to witness their beloved Steelers play in the Super Bowl.
Although the Steelers faced defeat against the Colts in their away game, the atmosphere among the fans in Dublin was electric. They reveled in the camaraderie, enjoying the vibrant spirit of American football amidst the backdrop of Irish culture.
“I would sell a kidney for it,” De Lappe expressed passionately, reflecting the depth of his devotion. “The two of us are Steelers fans, so hopefully we’ll get over there in the next few years.”
