Simon Porte Jacquemus: From Chiquito Handbag to Global Expansion

Chiquito Handbag and Ambitions of Simon Porte Jacquemus

The 3.3-inch-long Chiquito handbag, a signature piece from Simon Porte Jacquemus, has become a symbol of his innovative spirit, yet it stands in stark contrast to the expansive vision he holds for his brand. At just 34 years old, Mr. Jacquemus has made a significant mark on the fashion industry since founding his namesake label in Paris 15 years ago. Known for his extravagant fashion shows that captivate audiences, he has now taken a significant step by launching a boutique in Manhattan this past Friday. This marks a pivotal moment as it is his first store in the United States and the fifth globally.

The designer’s rapid expansion includes a series of strategic openings, with a location on the prestigious Avenue Montaigne in Paris launched in 2022, followed by boutiques in Seoul, St. Tropez, and Dubai. Exciting plans are already in motion for additional stores, including one on New Bond Street in London next month and another on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles set for February.

Located on Spring Street in SoHo, the New York City store finds itself in a vibrant neighborhood, right across from a boutique of another renowned French luxury brand. This store has been in the spotlight since June, following the departure of its top designer. Mr. Jacquemus noted, “It’s in front of Chanel,” hinting at the competitive landscape. Interestingly, he is among the names being speculated as a potential successor at Chanel, alongside other notable designers like Hedi Slimane and Jonathan Anderson.

In a recent phone conversation, Mr. Jacquemus reflected on the ongoing discussions surrounding his name, stating, “When someone leaves a big house, my name is mentioned more and more. It means we are working in the right direction. It’s always nice to be in those rumors.” His Paris store, notably located on the same street as a Chanel boutique, further cements his position in the high-stakes world of luxury fashion.
