Robots in Love: A Musical Journey
In the spring of 2014, Hue Park found himself immersed in the ambiance of a Brooklyn coffee shop, where the enchanting indie pop ballad “Everyday Robots” by Damon Albarn wafted through the air. The lyrics resonated with him: “We are everyday robots on our phones / In the process of getting home.” This moment sparked a creative epiphany in Park’s mind—what if there existed a world populated by robots that resembled humans?
Thus, the concept for a one-act Korean-language musical was born, centered around two abandoned robots who discover love amidst the bustling backdrop of Seoul in the year 2064. Collaborating with his former New York University classmate, Will Aronson, the duo crafted a narrative that would capture hearts. The musical premiered in Seoul in 2016 and has since enjoyed five successful commercial productions, solidifying its place in the theater scene.
Renowned New York Times critic Jesse Green heralded the English-language adaptation, which premiered at Atlanta’s Alliance Theater in 2020, as “charming” and “Broadway-ready.” This exciting version is set to open at the prestigious Belasco Theater on November 12, featuring the talented Darren Criss and Helen J. Shen in leading roles.
The storyline revolves around two outcast helperbots who meet in a retirement home for robots, embarking on a journey of self-discovery and connection while confronting their own obsolescence. Park emphasized the musical’s relevance in the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, noting how people have grown accustomed to solitude, often finding comfort in connecting through screens rather than in person. “It’s a reflection of our times,” he remarked in a recent interview in Midtown Manhattan.
As previews commenced last month, Park, 41, a former K-pop lyricist responsible for the show’s poignant lyrics, and Aronson, 43, who composed the captivating music — both of whom collaborated on the book — shared insights into their inspirations and the contrasting approaches they took to develop the Korean and English versions of the show. In a separate video call, Criss, 37, and Shen, 24, discussed the unique challenges they face while portraying robots that embody human characteristics.
