Reflections on Election Integrity as Election Day Approaches

Reflections as Election Day Approaches

As we draw nearer to Election Day, a sense of cautious optimism envelops me. This sentiment isn’t so much rooted in the anticipation of the election’s outcomeā€”it’s far too close for either side to feel truly secureā€”but rather in the resilience and integrity of the electoral process itself. The legal maneuvers that Donald Trump employed to contest the 2020 election results have been soundly dismissed, and the legal loopholes he attempted to exploit have been effectively closed.

It’s important to clarify that I am not advocating for complacency. We should brace ourselves for the possibility that MAGA-aligned lawyers will unleash a barrage of baseless lawsuits and frivolous arguments in an attempt to alter the election results if Trump faces defeat. Additionally, we should remain vigilant, as it would not be surprising if MAGA supporters resort to violence, reminiscent of the events of January 6. However, I believe that the majority of Americans are unaware of the significant fortifications that have been made to our electoral system, which are designed to counteract Trump’s previous legal tactics. He cannot simply replicate the same strategy he utilized in 2020.

To truly grasp the changes weā€™ve implemented within our system, it is essential to dissect the strategy employed by Trump and his team in the lead-up to January 6. As I have previously articulated, this strategy comprised two primary components: the conspiracy theory and the coup theory.

  • Conspiracy Theory: This was the false narrative claiming that Trump had been unjustly deprived of an electoral victory that should have been his. To propagate this notion, Trump essentially commandeered a complicit and corrupt right-wing media apparatus, which amplified his election falsehoods to millions of disillusioned and agitated Republicans.
  • Coup Theory: This aspect represented the actual legal strategy aimed at overturning the election results. The cornerstone of this plan was dubbed operation ā€œGreen Bay Sweep.ā€ This term was inspired by a classic football maneuver, which involved executing an end run around the defensive line.

The interplay between these two theories created a volatile demand for a coup. The anger and frustration among right-wing supporters fueled the desire to challenge and overturn the election results, making the need for a legal framework to facilitate such a coup all the more pressing.
