Rediscovering Romance: A Unique Experience in Venice

Rediscovering Romance in Venice

Olivia and her husband were embarking on a much-needed romantic getaway. The couple had been struggling to find any moments of intimacy at home, especially with their two teenage children constantly around and an endless pile of dirty laundry. Thus, a weekend escape to Venice, timed perfectly with the city’s famous carnival in February, seemed like the ideal opportunity to rekindle their connection. However, instead of indulging in a serene gondola ride or a cozy dinner by the canals, their plans were centered around an extravagant masquerade ball and the tantalizing possibility of exploring relationships with new partners.

With their identities concealed behind beautifully crafted masks, the couple arrived at a private Venetian palazzo, where around 150 guests mingled, sipping champagne and savoring oysters while enjoying the melodies of a classical pianist and a string quartet. Meanwhile, downstairs, a “dungeon master” captivated attendees by demonstrating various B.D.S.M. techniques, including spanking, which piqued the interest of many. As the clock struck 10 p.m., the guests were invited to unveil their faces, signaling the opening of the playrooms—designated areas for consensual sexual encounters.

“Honestly, that was the most unique way to experience Venice,” Olivia, a photographer who splits her time between New York and London, shared. Although she had long been a member of Killing Kittens, a female-focused sex party club that organized the event, this was her and her husband’s first time traveling internationally to attend one of their gatherings. While they didn’t connect with another couple for a romantic encounter, the experience still reignited the spark in their relationship. “We simply observed and then enjoyed our own intimate moments afterward, reminiscing about the night,” Olivia added with a smile.

Emma Sayle, the founder of Killing Kittens, noted that approximately 60 to 70 percent of the attendees traveled from overseas, each couple investing around 500 pounds (approximately $630) to explore their desires. While membership to Killing Kittens is complimentary for women and nonbinary individuals, a “verification fee” of 20 pounds (about $26) is required to complete the membership process, secure tickets, and access community discussions. Men may join as guest members, which allows them to attend parties as the plus-one of a full member or to book tickets for singles’ events.

Ms. Sayle remarked, “We have always attracted a highly international crowd,” highlighting that members often travel from places as distant as the Western United States and Australia to attend events held in enchanting French châteaus and picturesque English country manors. Following the isolation brought on by the pandemic, the tourism sector has increasingly embraced sexual wellness as part of the broader wellness trend, which is now estimated to be worth over $651 billion globally, according to the Global Wellness Institute. This shift includes workshops, couples’ retreats, and programs led by medical professionals, all designed to enhance intimacy and connection.
