Queen Camilla, the consort of King Charles III of the United Kingdom, has regrettably withdrawn from two scheduled engagements this week following a diagnosis of a chest infection, as announced by Buckingham Palace on Tuesday. This news comes shortly after the royal couple’s return from an extensive royal tour in Australia and Samoa last month.
In an official statement, the palace indicated that the Queen “is currently unwell with a chest infection, for which her doctors have recommended a short period of rest.” It continued, “With great regret, Her Majesty has therefore had to withdraw from her engagements for this week.” The statement also expressed that the Queen “apologizes to all those who may be inconvenienced or disappointed as a result” of the cancellations.
It is anticipated that Camilla, who is 77 years old, will recover in time to participate in the ceremonies this weekend for Remembrance Day, a solemn occasion honoring members of the armed forces who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Currently, she is resting at home under the careful supervision of medical professionals.
This year has proven to be particularly challenging for the royal family regarding health matters. Both King Charles and Catherine, the Princess of Wales, have faced significant health issues, with each being treated for cancer. King Charles disclosed his diagnosis in April, stating he was returning to public duties less than three months after his treatment began. Meanwhile, in March, Catherine announced her own cancer treatment; she has since resumed a number of public appearances.
The concurrent health struggles of these prominent royal figures have inadvertently shone a spotlight on Queen Camilla, who has stepped up to manage additional responsibilities during her husband’s treatment. During their recent visit to Samoa, the royal couple engaged in various events, although many were hindered by severe tropical downpours.
In a separate statement on Tuesday, the palace confirmed that King Charles proceeded with his scheduled duties, including hosting an audience at Buckingham Palace with Qatar’s newly appointed ambassador to the United Kingdom.
