North Korean Troops Engage in Ukraine Conflict
In a surprising development, North Korean military forces have reportedly joined the fray in Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. This engagement marks the first encounter between North Korean troops and Ukrainian forces, who are currently occupying a substantial portion of Russia’s Kursk region. The information comes from both a senior Ukrainian official and a high-ranking U.S. official.
The clashes, described as limited in scope, appear to have been an initial attempt by North Korean troops to test Ukrainian defenses for vulnerabilities. These North Korean soldiers were observed fighting alongside Russia’s 810 Separate Naval Infantry Brigade, according to the Ukrainian source. However, the exact timing of these confrontations remains unclear.
Details about casualties have not been fully disclosed; the Ukrainian official did not provide specifics. Nevertheless, the U.S. official indicated that a notable number of North Korean troops sustained fatalities during these skirmishes. Both officials chose to remain anonymous due to the sensitive nature of military intelligence.
Estimates from Ukrainian and Western officials suggest that approximately 10,000 North Korean soldiers have been dispatched by leader Kim Jong-un to support Russian troops in their efforts to reclaim the Kursk region from Ukrainian control. Since last summer, Ukrainian forces have managed to secure around 250 square miles in this area.
While most of the North Korean contingent has yet to engage in extensive combat, their presence on the battlefield has been characterized by Western and Ukrainian officials as a significant escalation in the conflict, which has been ongoing for over two years. In a recent address to the nation, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky acknowledged the involvement of North Korean forces and urged Ukraine’s allies to provide assistance in addressing this emerging threat.
