Emerging Evidence of North Korean Troops in the Ukraine Conflict

A recently released video, allegedly depicting numerous North Korean soldiers queuing to receive Russian military uniforms, has surfaced, raising concerns among Ukrainian officials about the potential involvement of Pyongyang’s troops in the ongoing conflict. The footage, shared by Ukraine’s Centre for Strategic Communications and Information Security—operating under the Culture and Information Ministry—purports to show North Korean soldiers lined up to collect bags, clothing, and other military gear distributed by Russian servicemen.

“We obtained this video from our own sources. For security reasons, we cannot disclose further details about these sources,” stated Ihor Solovey, the head of the center. “The video distinctly displays North Korean personnel receiving Russian uniforms under the supervision of the Russian military.”

This video is deemed significant for Ukraine, as it represents the first visual evidence of North Korea’s involvement in the war alongside Russia, now not just providing weaponry and munitions but also contributing personnel to the conflict.

The center asserts that the footage was recorded by a Russian soldier in the past few days, although the precise location remains undisclosed. This revelation follows claims by Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukrainian military intelligence, who indicated in local media that approximately 11,000 North Korean infantrymen are currently undergoing training in eastern Russia, with expectations that they will be ready for combat on the front lines by November.

“The emergence of additional troops poses a significant challenge, as it will necessitate even more weaponry on our part to counter them,” Budanov remarked. “The release of this video serves as an important signal to the global community that, with two nations officially at war against Ukraine, we will require increased support to combat this aggression.”

If the reports are accurate, the deployment of North Korean soldiers in Ukraine would further solidify the escalating military cooperation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Last summer, the two leaders formalized their alliance by signing a strategic partnership treaty, which obligates both nations to extend military assistance to one another. Notably, North Korean weaponry has already been deployed in the ongoing war in Ukraine.
