After months of significant turmoil and internal strife, the leader of the left-wing SYRIZA party, Stefanos Kasselakis, has announced the formation of a new political movement. This newly conceived party has yet to be officially named, but Kasselakis clarified that it represents “the continuation of the democratic SYRIZA party, distinct from the current iteration that prevents individuals from participating in the party’s processes.”
During a recent congress held in Athens, Kasselakis was barred from entering the meeting hall, as he is no longer recognized as a member of the party. The situation escalated into a tense confrontation, prompting Kasselakis to organize a gathering of his supporters for Saturday afternoon. In this pivotal meeting held at his office, he proclaimed the inception of the unnamed party, stating, “Today, a movement is being born—a movement championing democracy and the rights of free citizens. I will reveal the name shortly. Just yesterday, we faced a crucial dilemma: should we validate the ongoing processes with our silence, thereby making them seem acceptable, or should we boldly voice our dissent? After all, silence is not merely inaction; it can be a form of complicity.”
He further emphasized the democratic nature of the movement by saying, “You will determine the name of this movement. You will be its true owners, and I will serve as your president, dedicated to your vision.”
In the wake of Kasselakis’ announcement, several members of SYRIZA’s parliamentary contingent expressed their intention to depart from the party and pursue independent status. This shift signifies a notable transformation in Greece’s political landscape, as the center-left Pasok party is now poised to become the largest opposition force in the country.
