Mubi Cancels Istanbul Film Festival Following Government Ban
In a significant move, the renowned global streaming platform, production company, and film distributor Mubi has decided to cancel its highly anticipated festival in Turkey. This decision came after local authorities imposed a ban on the screening of Queer, the latest film by acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino. The festival, known as Mubi Fest Istanbul, was scheduled to take place from November 7 to November 10, and was set to feature Queer as its opening film.
Queer, based on the novel by William S. Burroughs and starring Daniel Craig as a gay expatriate navigating life in Mexico, has garnered attention for its LGBTQ+ themes. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and was expected to resonate with audiences in Istanbul. However, authorities intervened at the last minute, deeming the film’s content “provocative” and not suitable for public screening. In response to this unjust censorship, Mubi made the commendable decision to cancel the entire festival rather than comply with the government’s demands.
In a heartfelt statement released on its Turkish-language Instagram account, Mubi Turkey expressed its deep disappointment. The statement read: “Hours before the opening of Mubi Fest Istanbul 2024, which we have been meticulously planning for months, we were informed that the screening of Queer — the festival’s opening film — has been banned by a decision of the Kadıköy District Governorate of Istanbul.” It further elaborated, “The decision states that the film is prohibited on the grounds that it contains provocative content that could endanger public peace, with the ban being imposed for security reasons. We believe this ban is a direct restriction on art and freedom of expression.”
The statement continued: “Festivals are spaces that celebrate art, cultural diversity, and community, bringing people together. This ban not only targets a single film but also undermines the very essence and purpose of the festival.” Mubi concluded its announcement with a note of gratitude to all the artists, audiences, and supporters who were eager to participate, stating, “We truly appreciate your understanding and solidarity. We know you are as saddened by this situation as we are. We will continue to advocate for the protection of freedom of expression and artistic integrity.”
About the Film
Queer stars Daniel Craig in the role of William Lee, an American expat living in Mexico City, who finds himself yearning for a younger man named Eugene, portrayed by Drew Starkey. In our review of Queer, we noted: “When the aging gay man invites the object of his affections to embark on a journey to South America in search of a psychedelic drug called ‘yage’ (ayahuasca), the narrative shifts from their intense relationship, reminiscent of Death In Venice, to a captivating Orphean retelling. This exploration delves into self-discovery, the longing for self-acceptance, and the bittersweet nature of nostalgia.” We highlighted Guadagnino’s signature sensuality, stunning visuals, and thoughtfully chosen music, emphasizing that Queer is both bold and incredibly compelling.
Release Information
Mubi has secured multiple distribution rights for Queer, covering territories including Turkey, the UK, Ireland, Canada, Latin America, Germany, Austria, Benelux, Spain, and India. The film is slated for release in the UK and Ireland on December 13, while audiences in most parts of mainland Europe will have to wait until next year for its theatrical debut.
