Moldova’s Pivotal Elections: A Crossroads for European Aspirations
On 20 October, Moldova is set to hold crucial elections that will shape the nation’s future regarding its European integration. Citizens will cast their votes not only in the presidential elections but also in a significant referendum aimed at enshrining the country’s European aspirations into the constitution. The National Electoral Commission’s strategic decision to schedule both pivotal votes on the same day underscores the importance of engaging the electorate in this fundamental choice about the direction of Moldova’s destiny.
Currently, Moldova’s national institutions, alongside the sitting president, Maia Sandu, exhibit a strong pro-European and pro-Western orientation. A successful re-election of Sandu for a second term, coupled with a favorable outcome for the pro-European side in the referendum, would signify a decisive break from the past, particularly distancing the nation from the pro-Russian presidency of Igor Dodon.
Surveys indicate that Maia Sandu is the frontrunner in the presidential race, with a majority of voters anticipated to support EU accession in the referendum. However, such positive outcomes could escalate existing tensions, especially given the de facto control exerted by pro-Russian separatists in the eastern regions of Moldova. Therefore, the voting process is expected to unfold in a charged atmosphere.
The Kremlin’s Influence at Play
In an interview with Euronews, Moldova’s Deputy Prime Minister, Cristina Gherasimov, discussed the government’s current efforts to maintain stability, particularly in the tense Transnistria region bordering Russia, where pro-Russian separatists have long received support from the Kremlin. She stated, “There were significant concerns regarding potential destabilization in Transnistria. Over the past couple of years, especially following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, we have managed to keep the situation calm and stable in our country, and we aim to continue this trend.”

However, Gherasimov also remarked on Russia’s multifaceted approach to influence Moldovan voters leading up to the elections. “Regrettably, we have witnessed a comprehensive operation deploying the classic tactics of the Kremlin, executed on an unprecedented scale.”
She elaborated, “We are observing the flow of illicit funds into our political landscape, the utilization of local proxy parties aimed at destabilizing the situation, and attempts to bribe both potential candidates and voters in the elections. Additionally, a robust disinformation campaign is in play, with propaganda primarily targeting pro-European sentiments within the electorate.”
