Mixed Emotions Among Iranians Following Israeli Strikes

On Saturday, a palpable sense of anxiety and uncertainty swept through Iran as the country grappled with a series of retaliatory strikes launched by Israel. Many Iranians expressed a cautious optimism about the future, hoping that this escalation might not spiral into a broader conflict.

Soheil, a 37-year-old engineer residing in the central city of Isfahan, shared his observations. “Today at work, the atmosphere was charged with discussions about the recent attacks,” he reported. His colleagues exhibited a glimmer of hope, believing that Israel’s focus on military targets during the strikes could signify a restraint that might prevent further escalation. “It seems that people are hopeful that soon the situation will be back to normal,” he conveyed during a phone call with The New York Times.

However, he acknowledged that the current mood is far from ordinary. “The vibe is not normal, though, at the moment,” he noted. “People are feeling a range of emotions: some are filled with worry, others remain indifferent, and a few even express relief, believing that these Israeli attacks might serve to humble the regime a bit.”

Soheil, like many other Iranians who spoke to The Times on Saturday, preferred to remain anonymous, fearing potential repercussions for sharing his views. Meanwhile, Iranian officials and state media have attempted to downplay the severity of the Israeli strikes, characterizing the damage as “limited” and asserting that Iran’s air defense systems successfully intercepted many of the incoming missiles.
