Lynda Carter’s Musical Comeback and Enduring Legacy

Lynda Carter’s Musical Comeback

When Lynda Carter released her catchy pop single “Pink Slip Lollipop” this past summer, she envisioned it as a whimsical anthem for anyone who has experienced the frustrating phenomenon of being ghosted or gaslighted in relationships. “I just thought it was funny,” she remarked during a video call from her home just outside Washington, D.C.

Carter, who is an enduring cultural icon, is best known for her portrayal of Wonder Woman in the beloved 1970s television series. However, her journey began in music, performing in clubs across Arizona when she was just 14 years old. After winning the title of Miss World USA in 1972, she ventured to Los Angeles, hoping to land a record deal or a breakthrough acting role. That dream ultimately materialized when she was cast as the superhero that would make her a feminist symbol for generations, even as many men struggled to grasp her significance.

“They don’t understand women — they never get it,” Carter expressed candidly. “We understand why we get Wonder Woman,” she continued, emphasizing the strength and worth of women. She tapped her chest and added, “And how determined and how worthy our minds and our bodies are.” In her own experience, she carries with her a wealth of memories and insights, from her collaborations with the Muppets to Patty Jenkins’s acclaimed “Wonder Woman” films, and the future vision for the Smithsonian American Women’s History Museum.

Mom Jokes

“Get to know me just a little bit, and you’ll discover that I have a pretty good sense of humor,” Carter shared. However, she added with a laugh, “My kids do not seem to agree.” She reminisced about her time performing on stage, where she would tell the same silly jokes that would elicit laughter from audiences, while her children would exchange eye rolls, exclaiming, “Ugh.”

A Love for Turtles

Carter has a deep affection for turtles, saying, “I like land turtles. I like sea turtles. I like all kinds of turtles.” She finds them utterly fascinating and has a special place in Florida where she enjoys watching sea turtles nest. “It’s pretty exciting to see them,” she noted. Additionally, she has a pond on her property that is home to resident turtles, which she chooses to observe rather than disturb.

Guest-Starring on ‘The Muppet Show’ in 1980

Reflecting on her memorable experience guest-starring on “The Muppet Show” in 1980, Carter said, “My Muppet experience was just amazing.” She recalled that Jim Henson was present during her appearance, bringing an extra layer of magic to the show. “They chose ‘Orange Colored Sky,’ an old ’50s classic, for me to perform, and then I had the chance to sing ‘Rubberband Man’ with the band. It was a fantastic show to be a part of,” she concluded, her eyes sparkling with nostalgia.
