Long Island Child Therapist Arrested for Distributing Child Sexual Abuse Imagery

Child Therapist Charged with Distributing Disturbing Imagery

A child therapist based on Long Island has been arrested for allegedly distributing sexual abuse imagery featuring children as young as infants on various social media platforms, according to a federal complaint filed recently. The therapist, identified as Renee Hoberman, 36, from Plainview, New York, made her initial court appearance on Wednesday before Magistrate Judge Arlene R. Lindsay in Central Islip. Following the proceedings, the judge ordered that Ms. Hoberman be held without bail at the Metropolitan Detention Center located in Brooklyn, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York.

Federal prosecutors allege that over several months in 2023, Ms. Hoberman, who is a licensed social worker and also known by the name Rina, utilized messaging applications to upload sexually abusive images of minors. These included horrific videos depicting a man committing acts of rape against infants who were one year old or younger. The complaint details that as recently as October 16, Ms. Hoberman uploaded such reprehensible images to multiple “chats” on the messaging app Kik. In these messages, she falsely claimed to be a man with several young children under his care.

Furthermore, the complaint reveals that Ms. Hoberman described punishing these children through sexual assaults and shared two videos that illustrated the abuse of children she claimed belonged to the fictional man she was impersonating. In a shocking invitation to another chat participant, she suggested a visit to “spank the children,” demonstrating a disturbing level of depravity.

It is important to note that while Ms. Hoberman has been charged with the distribution of child sexual abuse imagery, she has not been accused of producing such content. The complaint does not indicate any direct involvement by her in the actual abuse of children.

The public defender representing Ms. Hoberman, Evan Sugar, did not provide an immediate comment when approached for a statement. Additionally, her family members, including her brother and father, were contacted by phone on Wednesday evening but both chose to refrain from commenting on the situation.
