As Halloween approaches, many find themselves scrambling to put together a costume that stands out yet is budget-friendly and quick to assemble. For those with limited time and resources, this last-minute rush can actually serve as a wonderful opportunity to reimagine the items already lurking in their closets.
This creative approach is particularly embraced by adult Disney enthusiasts, commonly referred to as Disney adults. Unlike younger guests, those aged 14 and older are not permitted to don costumes at Disney resorts, prompting them to explore an alternative form of expression known as “Disney bounding.” This term, popularized by Carlye Wisel, a theme-park journalist and host of the “Very Amusing” podcast, refers to the art of crafting outfits that are inspired by beloved Disney characters using regular clothing and clever accessories.
“When you Disney bound, you’re not merely selecting a costume from a plastic bag hanging on the wall at Spirit Halloween,” explains Ms. Wisel, 37, who resides in Los Angeles. “Instead, you’re curating an ensemble from items that inspire you daily.”
Leslie Kay, 34, who is credited with coining the term “Disney bounding,” describes it as “a highly creative form of self-expression” that utilizes one’s personal wardrobe. Known for her unique style that leans towards a punk and grunge aesthetic, Ms. Kay often gravitates towards dressing up as Disney villains.
- Cruella de Vil: For a quick and easy go-to, Ms. Kay recommends channeling the iconic Cruella. She achieves this look by layering black base clothing, pairing it with striking red shoes, and finishing off with a white cardigan or blazer that mimics the character’s dramatic fur coat.
- Hades: Ms. Kay has also creatively assembled outfits inspired by Hades from “Hercules,” showcasing her ability to mix and match pieces in her wardrobe.
- Billy Butcherson: Another character she enjoys embodying is Billy Butcherson from “Hocus Pocus,” demonstrating her knack for transforming everyday clothing into recognizable character tributes.
