Jerry Jones’ Frustration Over Offseason Moves
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stirred up quite a conversation on Tuesday morning during his weekly radio segment when he expressed visible irritation regarding the team’s lack of offseason roster improvements. His defensive response came after being questioned about the franchise’s recent decisions.
Jones, who regularly speaks with 105.3 The Fan, the team’s flagship radio station, every Tuesday and Friday, seemed particularly perturbed by the tone of the inquiry. While attending NFL meetings in Atlanta later that day, he opened up in an exclusive interview with The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, providing insight into his reaction.
“I wouldn’t go as far as to say I was yelling,” Jones clarified. “But the reality is, if I’m going to be scrutinized, I don’t want it to come from those I’m paying. I can handle criticism from fans or outsiders. I take great pride in maintaining a fair relationship with the media; we’re like family. However, I was feeling a bit frustrated today.”
He elaborated on his annoyance, noting that the questions were focused on current offseason decisions, which he felt was an unnecessary dive into the past. “They might as well have pulled up decisions made back in 2010,” he remarked. “I understand the fans’ frustrations, and I’m all for accountability, but it felt misplaced coming from those who should be on my side.”
Jones emphasized that his dissatisfaction was more about the questioners than the questions themselves. “The wrong people were asking the questions. If it had been true fans or knowledgeable football experts, I might have responded differently,” he explained.
Furthermore, the Cowboys owner made it clear that he has no intentions of making major changes to his coaching staff despite the team’s recent struggles. Most of the coaching personnel are either on one-year contracts or in the final year of their agreements, including head coach Mike McCarthy, who is in the last year of a five-year deal.
Following a disheartening 47-9 defeat to the Detroit Lions at AT&T Stadium—marking the worst home loss in Jones’ 35 years as owner and general manager—he was asked about the future of his coaching staff. “Absolutely,” he responded when questioned about sticking with McCarthy and his coordinators. “There’s not even a distant thought about making a change. The game is all about repetition. We know what went wrong, and we have seen the same individuals perform well in the past.”
Jones expressed confidence in his team’s abilities, stating, “What you do is focus on refining your techniques and efforts. If we can improve in those areas, we can stay competitive and win games.”
As the team heads into its bye week with a 3-3 record, Jones maintained his belief in the roster’s potential. “Of course, we have a strong roster. I’m proud of our personnel,” he said when asked about the team’s capabilities.
When it comes to making any moves before the trade deadline, Jones is not considering it. “Not thinking that,” he stated firmly.
