Israeli Military Claims Killing of Hezbollah Leader

On Tuesday, the Israeli military announced that it had carried out an airstrike weeks ago that resulted in the death of Hashem Safieddine, who was believed to be the likely successor to the recently assassinated leader of Hezbollah. This operation took place near Beirut, Lebanon, and has stirred considerable speculation in the region.

Rumors regarding Mr. Safieddine’s potential demise had been circulating since Israeli warplanes launched a series of strikes targeting a high-level meeting of Hezbollah’s senior leadership earlier in October. This particular assault was one of the most intense bombardments to hit the Dahiya area—a Hezbollah stronghold—since the killing of the organization’s long-time leader, Hassan Nasrallah, on September 27.

Mr. Safieddine, who is a cousin of Nasrallah and one of the most influential figures within Hezbollah, was believed to be present at that critical meeting. According to the Israeli military’s statement, the airstrike that reportedly killed him occurred approximately three weeks ago. The military described Mr. Safieddine as having played a crucial role in the organization, often stepping in as the leader when Nasrallah was outside Lebanon.

In the statement, the Israeli military noted, “Throughout the years, Safieddine directed terrorist attacks against the state of Israel and took part in Hezbollah’s central decision-making processes.” The military also mentioned that over 25 Hezbollah operatives were in attendance at the meeting during which the strike was executed, further underscoring the operation’s significance.

However, the Israeli military did not provide any concrete evidence to substantiate its claim regarding Mr. Safieddine’s death. In the weeks following the airstrike, Hezbollah has largely refrained from commenting on his status, and as of now, there has been no immediate response from the group regarding these allegations.
