Investigation into Embezzlement Case Involving Greek Catholic Church Officials

Investigation into Alleged Embezzlement within the Greek Catholic Church

Authorities in Athens are currently investigating two high-ranking officials of the Catholic Church in Greece for their alleged involvement in the embezzlement of approximately €3 million from church funds. Reports indicate that these funds were misappropriated to finance investments in nightclubs across the region.

The investigation is being led by Greece’s Anti-Money Laundering Authority, which has unveiled a troubling pattern of financial misconduct linking the Catholic Church’s resources to the vibrant nightlife scene in Greece. As part of this inquiry, bank accounts and assets belonging to five nightclub owners in the southern Peloponnese region have already been frozen.

Domestic media reports suggest that this case dates back eight years, with the initial suspicious transaction occurring when funds were funneled to one of the nightclub owners under the guise of a legitimate investment. The most recent questionable transfer, amounting to €50,000, was reportedly executed just days ago.

What began as a routine audit has escalated into a serious investigation, now under the purview of the chief prosecutor’s office, which is expected to further examine the allegations of embezzlement and money laundering. The prosecutor’s office plans to interrogate seven individuals associated with the case and may initiate felony proceedings.

In light of these allegations, the Catholic Church in Greece issued a statement on Thursday, asserting that it had no prior knowledge of the actions taken by the two priests involved. The statement read:

“Following today’s press reports regarding embezzlement and money laundering, we declare that we have no official information on the issue. We are therefore awaiting an update from the relevant authorities so that we can take an official position on the matter.”
