Georgia’s Upcoming Parliamentary Elections: A Defining Moment
Georgia is set to hold its parliamentary elections this Sunday, a significant event as it will be the first conducted under a fully proportional representation system. The stakes are incredibly high, with the results having the potential to influence the nationās trajectory toward European Union integration and its distancing from Russian influence.
As the election date draws near, the political atmosphere in Georgia has become increasingly polarized. Opinion polls have been inconsistent and often contradictory, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the elections. The ruling party, Georgian Dream, positions the vote as a critical choice between ‘peace and war,’ while opposition groups frame the election as a contest between the democratic values of the West and the authoritarian grip of Russia.
In light of these developments, Georgia’s Prime Minister, Irakli Kobakhidze, recently engaged in an extensive interview with Euronews, discussing the significance of these elections against the backdrop of ongoing European Union accession talks and the looming question of Russian interference.
Euronews: As a Georgian, what does Europe signify for you, and what would it mean for Georgia to join the European Union?
Irakli Kobakhidze: Being part of the European family represents a historic choice for both Georgia and its people. As a Christian nation, Europe has always been closely associated with our identity. Historically, Europe has defended and protected Christianity for Georgia, making it a natural choice for us. This deep-rooted connection is one of the primary reasons we aspire to become a full-fledged member of the European family. Furthermore, aligning with Europe signifies a pathway to enhanced prosperity and development for our citizens, which is why we are firmly committed to this foreign policy priority.
Euronews: Recently, we’ve witnessed elections in other countries, particularly in Moldova, where Russia’s involvement raised significant controversy. Do you anticipate a similar scenario unfolding in Georgia?
Kobakhidze: I can assure you that Russia does not wield influence in Georgia. There are no political parties that operate under their sway, nor do they have any control over media outlets in our country. Therefore, it is safe to say that the Russian side cannot exert any meaningful influence over the elections in Georgia.
