Generosity Transforms the Los Angeles Art Scene: The Mohns’ Impact

Generosity in the Los Angeles Art Scene

In the vibrant landscape of cultural institutions in Los Angeles, many organizations often express challenges in attracting substantial philanthropic support. However, one notable exception has emerged in the form of art collector Jarl Mohn, 72, and his wife Pamela Mohn, 71, who have become pivotal figures in the local art community through their remarkable generosity.

Recently, the Mohns made headlines by donating an impressive collection of 260 artworks created by Los Angeles artists. This significant contribution will be shared among three esteemed institutions: the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Hammer Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA). In addition to the artworks, their generous gift includes a substantial endowment estimated between $15 million and $20 million earmarked for new acquisitions and operational expenses. This funding is designed to ensure that these artworks can also travel and be showcased in museums across various cities.

Last June, the nonprofit visual art space known as The Brick—previously referred to as LAXART—celebrated the opening of its new location on Western Avenue in Melrose Hill. This milestone was made possible largely due to a generous donation of $1.25 million from the Mohns. While the couple collaborates on their philanthropic endeavors, it is Jarl who has been the primary driving force behind their extensive art collection.

In another significant contribution, the Mohns pledged a $4.4 million naming gift to the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, which is poised to substantially fund the museum’s renovation efforts in the downtown area. Their commitment to fostering the arts extends further with the establishment of a grant program through the Los Angeles Nomadic Division (LAND). This initiative provides financial support to up to 20 emerging artists from Los Angeles, offering each recipient $5,000 annually over five years, alongside valuable curatorial and production assistance. This support aims to facilitate the creation of their first significant public presentations within Los Angeles County.

Moreover, since 2012, the Mohns have been instrumental in sponsoring the Mohn Awards, which recognize artistic excellence in conjunction with the Hammer Museum’s prestigious biennial exhibition, “Made in L.A.” Their steadfast commitment to the arts not only enriches the cultural fabric of Los Angeles but also inspires future generations of artists and art enthusiasts alike.
