G7 Defence Ministers Reaffirm Unity Amid Escalating Global Conflicts
The Defence Ministers of the G7 nations convened on Saturday in Naples, Italy, to reaffirm their solidarity in response to the deepening conflicts in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine, as stated in their joint declaration. The defence chiefs, representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, expressed a unified commitment to tackle pressing security challenges during a period characterized by significant instability.
In their statement, the G7 ministers emphasized their dedication to providing ongoing support to Ukraine, including military assistance both in the immediate future and for the long term. This commitment highlights the importance of maintaining international security and stability.
Italy’s Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto, addressed the gathering, noting that “the brutal aggression of Russia in Ukraine, coupled with the critical situation in the Middle East, the profound instability in sub-Saharan Africa, and rising tensions in the Indo-Pacific region, underscore a deteriorating security landscape with ominous forecasts for the near future.” He further articulated the duality of the current global environment, stating, “On one side, we have nations and organizations that uphold a world order based on international law; on the other side, we face those who systematically undermine democracy and pursue their goals through military force.”
Additionally, the meeting was attended by Josep Borrell, the High Representative of the European Union, and Mark Rutte, NATO’s Secretary General, underscoring the collaborative nature of international security efforts. The joint declaration notably condemned Iran’s ballistic missile program and its large-scale attacks against Israel, stressing the necessity for all involved parties to adhere to international law.

The discussions extended to security issues in Africa and developments in the Asia-Pacific region, reflecting the G7’s broad focus on global security.
