Former Congressman Michael Grimm Paralyzed After Polo Accident

Michael Grimm, the former U.S. representative from Staten Island, has tragically been paralyzed following a serious fall from a horse during a polo match on September 22. This unfortunate incident has drawn attention to the challenges he now faces. Grimm, a Republican known for his past as an F.B.I. agent and Marine, previously served in Congress until his resignation in 2015 due to legal troubles.

The news of Mr. Grimm’s condition was initially shared by his colleague Greg Kelly, a broadcaster from Newsmax, where Grimm had transitioned into a second career as an on-air personality. On his radio show, Kelly revealed that Grimm sustained significant injuries that required emergency surgery after being thrown from his horse, describing him as a skilled horseman. Kelly urged listeners to “please say a prayer” for Grimm during this difficult time.

Vincent Ignizio, a close friend and former city councilman from Staten Island, confirmed that Grimm is currently paralyzed from the chest down, underscoring the severity of his injuries.

Michael Grimm’s political career began in 2010 when he was elected to the House of Representatives. However, his time in office was marred by legal issues. In 2014, he was indicted for failing to report nearly a million dollars in gross receipts from a Manhattan restaurant he owned, called Healthalicious, and for lying under oath about the matter. Despite this, he won re-election later that same year.

Ultimately, Grimm pleaded guilty to felony tax evasion, which led to his resignation from the 11th Congressional District seat—encompassing Staten Island and parts of Brooklyn—in January 2015. He was sentenced to eight months in prison but only served seven. His fall from grace and subsequent challenges serve as a reminder of the complexities of his life and the struggles he now faces.
