Exploring the Enchantment of Neva
Anyone familiar with Hayao Miyazaki’s iconic film Princess Mononoke, released in 1997, will likely recognize its profound influence on the video game Neva. This captivating adventure centers on a courageous young warrior and her majestic, wolf-like companion who strive to prevent an impending ecological disaster. Both narratives unfold against a backdrop of a once-vibrant natural world, now tainted by a sinister, writhing substance capable of corrupting and transforming animals into frenzied, relentless predators.
Neva pays homage to Studio Ghibli to such an extent that the term “influence” feels insufficient. However, its stunning visual presentation, engaging mechanics, and intricate level design elevate this adventure title from the ordinary to the extraordinary. The game’s aesthetic is reminiscent of Gris (2018), the debut title from Spanish developers Nomada Studio, renowned for its breathtaking use of monochromatic palettes.
As I navigated through a lush green meadow at the game’s outset, I was spellbound by the way the foreground evoked the simplicity of late 20th-century computer graphics, while the richly detailed mountainous landscape in the distance showcased the high level of artistry one expects from modern gaming. This harmonious blend of minimalist elements and rich detail bestows Neva with a striking visual impact that resonates deeply with players.
The story begins in medias res, introducing a woman, a magnificent wolf-like creature adorned with antlers yet bearing a single blind eye, and a playful cub. This trio stumbles upon a recently deceased bird, now transformed into an ominous dark flower. Before long, a creeping dark mass emerges, giving rise to slender, unsettling beings.
In a moment of intense struggle, the woman collapses, losing consciousness as the elder wolf valiantly battles the encroaching threat. Upon regaining her senses, the woman discovers that the menacing force has vanished, leaving behind the giant wolf, now motionless and unresponsive. The cub, seeking comfort, nudges against her, and a bond of solace forms between the two.
As Neva progresses, the narrative shifts to a sun-drenched landscape where the woman and the young cub find themselves at ease in a serene glade. The woman stirs from her slumber, gently calling the cub awake. “Neva,” she whispers, ushering in a new chapter of their journey.
