Exploring Books, Art, and Creativity: Insights from a Passionate Reader

What books are on your nightstand?

I’m currently immersed in “Our Strangers” by Lydia Davis. Her writing captivates me with its unique style and depth. I stumbled upon this gem in a quaint little bookshop, and I was thrilled to discover that it’s exclusively available in physical bookstores, not on Amazon. There’s something special about supporting local shops! Also resting on my nightstand is “I Heard Her Call My Name” by Lucy Sante, which I plan to dive into next. I’m a huge admirer of her work — and just to add, we are friends, which makes reading her books even more enjoyable.

How do you organize your books?

My library leans heavily towards art monographs and is arranged based on the relationships and connections I perceive among the works. For instance, I place books on Alexander Calder alongside those of Joan Miró since their friendship and mutual influence on each other’s art are fascinating to me. This method of organization not only reflects my personal connections but also creates a dialogue among the works on my shelves.

How do you sign books for your fans?

There’s an expectation for me to include a drawing during book signings, which can feel a bit daunting. I often worry that my art skills might let me down and ruin someone’s book. As a creative workaround, I initially had a series of rubber stamps created, which I would use with ink pads and then add a bit of embellishment. However, during one signing, a fan insisted I draw something directly, so I decided to draw their face while maintaining eye contact without glancing down at the page. The outcome was unexpectedly amusing and turned into a delightful shared experience — almost like a participatory performance. After that, it became a trend; everyone wanted me to do the same!

Do you have a favorite book cover?

I absolutely adore the cover of Rick Rubin’s book, “The Creative Act: A Way of Being.” Its design is striking and perfectly encapsulates the essence of the book.

Favorite book designer?

Peter Mendelsund stands out as a remarkable book designer in my eyes. When I was grappling with ideas for the cover of my own book, “Here,” I reached out to him, not knowing him personally at the time. I was both nervous and hopeful as I presented him with a dummy of my work. His insights were incredibly quick and clear; he suggested that since my book explores the life within a room, the cover should depict the exterior of the house. It was such an obvious yet brilliant idea that I was taken aback I hadn’t considered it myself!

Favorite graphic novel or novelist?

Olivier Schrauwen deserves a special mention. His creativity is unparalleled, and his humor is genuinely refreshing. His latest work, titled “Sunday,” is a testament to his originality and wit.
