Democracy Forward Launches Initiative to Combat Trump’s Second-Term Agenda

On Thursday, Democracy Forward, a prominent liberal legal organization known for its vigorous legal challenges against the Trump administration during its first term, announced a significant new initiative aimed at countering President-elect Donald J. Trump’s forthcoming agenda from day one of his second term. This ambitious project, dubbed Democracy 2025, seeks to create a formidable legal opposition to the anticipated policies of the new administration.

In a robust show of solidarity, over 800 attorneys from 280 organizations have joined forces to identify and develop potential legal cases. They are actively workshopping specific challenges to a comprehensive list of 600 “priority legal threats” — these encompass possible regulations, legislative measures, and administrative actions that may necessitate legal intervention, according to the organization’s leadership.

Unlike the unpreparedness that characterized the Democratic response in 2017, this time the coalition is determined to hit the ground running with a barrage of lawsuits. “We’re leveling up and lawyering up,” remarked Skye Perryman, the chief executive of Democracy Forward. “This wasn’t something that just everybody woke up the day after the election and started to plan.”

Over the past two years, Democracy Forward has meticulously analyzed the potential actions that the incoming Trump administration could undertake, focusing on issues they deem critical for defense. This proactive approach has been informed by a careful examination of actions from Trump’s first term, his campaign promises, and plans put forth by his allies, notably the Heritage Foundation and its ambitious Project 2025 agenda.

Moreover, the group is particularly attentive to Trump’s intentions to politicize government institutions, especially the Justice Department, against perceived adversaries. They are also concerned about his promises to dismantle federal agencies and terminate thousands of government employees.
