Dan Price, a prominent tech executive from Seattle, became widely known for his bold decision to raise employee salaries and for his progressive stance on social issues, particularly through social media. However, his reputation has taken a significant hit following serious legal allegations. On Thursday, he was charged with rape in Riverside County, California, according to court documents.
The 40-year-old Price was indicted last month by a grand jury on charges of raping an unconscious victim, as revealed in the unsealed records from Riverside Superior Court. After voluntarily appearing in court, he posted bail set at $55,000 and is slated for arraignment in January, as indicated in the legal documents.
The charges relate to an incident that occurred in 2021, when a former girlfriend, Kacie Margis, accused Price of raping her at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs, California. Margis reported that after she expressed her reluctance to engage in sexual activity and took a cannabis edible before going to sleep, Price allegedly assaulted her. The following day, she reported the incident to the police. Margis later went public with her allegations in 2022 as part of a comprehensive New York Times investigation. This investigation uncovered a troubling pattern of abusive behavior linked to Price, both in his personal life and within his company.
In response to the allegations, Price has vehemently denied any wrongdoing. He stepped down from his position as the chief executive of Gravity Payments, the company he founded, to concentrate fully on defending himself against what he describes as false accusations. In a statement released through his attorney, Vicki Podberesky, Price reiterated, āAs I said when these false allegations were reported over two years ago, I have never physically or sexually abused anyone.ā He has vowed to vigorously contest the charges against him.
