There are numerous indicators suggesting that Trump and his fervent supporters are eager to resort to violence against their political opponents. Almost four years ago, a violent mob stormed the United States Capitol in an attempt to overturn the outcome of the last presidential election. More recently, Trump has referred to his political adversaries as “vermin” and even hinted at using military force against what he describes as “the enemy from within.” Just last week, he criticized Liz Cheney, who has publicly endorsed Kamala Harris, and then made a troubling suggestion: “Let’s put her with a rifle standing there” and see how she feels “when the guns are trained on her face.” During a rally on Sunday, he stated that anyone attempting to confront him “would have to shoot through the fake news and I don’t mind that so much.”

It’s crucial to understand that Trump wouldn’t necessarily have to deploy military forces against American citizens to instill a sense of fear and oppression. All he would need to do is implicitly allow his extremist supporters to take matters into their own hands, creating a vigilante atmosphere.
