Challenges in Western North Carolina After Hurricane Helene

Struggles in Western North Carolina Post-Hurricane Helene

Nearly a month has passed since the remnants of Hurricane Helene wreaked havoc in western North Carolina, particularly around the Asheville area. While running water has been restored to most residents, the situation remains far from normal. Currently, the water emerging from taps is often discolored, appearing yellow or brown, rendering it unsafe for human consumption. Although it can be used for flushing toilets and taking showers, local officials have yet to provide a timeline for when the water will be deemed safe to drink again. The reservoir that supplies the water system still resembles a mixture more akin to chocolate milk than clear, pristine water.

The search for clean water is now a daily struggle for many residents. They are frequently seen heading to disaster relief sites to take showers, do laundry, and collect bottled drinking water. In addition, large containers filled with well water have been placed in various neighborhoods to assist those in need. Unfortunately, many local restaurants and breweries remain closed due to the lack of access to clean water, significantly impacting the community.

“It’s the new normal, going around to find places to do everyday tasks,” said Lisa Nowell of Swannanoa, N.C., after she completed laundry with her daughter at a disaster relief site. “Life has changed so instantly.” Despite the ongoing challenges related to the lack of potable water, many residents express understanding towards the difficulties that officials face as they work to recover from what Gov. Roy Cooper has described as “the deadliest and most damaging storm ever to hit North Carolina.”

A mobile shower facility in Asheville has been set up to provide some relief to the affected residents. The community continues to rally together during this trying time, demonstrating resilience and hope in the face of adversity.
