Challenges in Accessing Mpox Vaccines in the U.S. Amid Ongoing Outbreaks

Challenges in Accessing Mpox Vaccines in the U.S.

A particularly lethal variant of mpox, previously known as monkeypox, has resulted in over 48,000 reported cases and more than 1,100 fatalities across Africa this year. In response to this crisis, the Biden administration has committed to donating one million doses of the vaccine to the countries most affected by the outbreak. However, in the United States, access to mpox vaccines remains a significant challenge for many individuals who are at risk.

During the outbreak that hit the country in 2022, the mpox vaccine, known as Jynneos, was made available at no cost from the federal stockpile. Unfortunately, this initiative came to an end in April when the vaccine transitioned to a commercial distribution model. This shift has created barriers for many individuals seeking the vaccine, as insurance companies have yet to fully cover the costs. In some instances, they only reimburse a minimal fraction of the total expense.

Additionally, some young gay or bisexual men express reluctance about utilizing their insurance for the vaccine due to concerns about privacy and not being out to their families. This situation is further complicated for individuals at high risk, such as those living with H.I.V., who may lack any form of health insurance altogether.

“This represents a significant obstacle, especially as we face heightened concerns about the potential for another outbreak,” remarked Dr. Stacey Trooskin, the executive medical officer of the Mazzoni Center, a prominent sexual health clinic catering to the L.G.B.T.Q. community in Philadelphia. While the virus currently circulating in Africa has not yet reached the United States, the ongoing outbreak overseas has prompted an uptick in the number of Philadelphia residents seeking vaccination against mpox.
