Legal Action Against Donald Trump by the Central Park Five

In a significant development, five Black and Latino men who were wrongfully convicted as teenagers have taken legal action against former President Donald J. Trump in federal court. This lawsuit, filed on Monday, stems from claims of defamation made during a widely publicized presidential debate.

The men—Korey Wise, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, Kevin Richardson, and Antron McCray—are collectively known as the Central Park Five. Their case dates back to 1989, when they were accused of the brutal rape and assault of a jogger in Central Park. This incident not only captured national attention but also sparked intense discussions about race relations in New York City. After enduring years of wrongful imprisonment, the men were exonerated when DNA evidence and a confession from another individual cleared them of all charges.

During a presidential debate held in September, Vice President Kamala Harris highlighted Trump’s controversial past actions. She pointed out that he had taken out a full-page advertisement in The New York Times advocating for the death penalty for the accused, demonstrating his willingness to exploit racial tensions for political gain. Harris remarked that this behavior exemplified how Trump had historically sought to use race as a divisive tool among the American populace.

In a rebuttal to Harris’s comments, Trump made a series of inaccurate statements, claiming that the Central Park Five had confessed to the crime. He stated, “They admitted — they said, they pled guilty,” and further implied that the attack resulted in a fatality. “And I said, well, if they pled guilty, they badly hurt a person, killed a person, ultimately,” he added, perpetuating misleading information regarding the case.
