This week, Canada made headlines by shutting down TikTok’s offices, but the move was not what many had anticipated. [Read: Canada Shuts TikTok’s Offices Over National Security Risks]
The Canadian government has mandated the closure of TikTok’s offices located in Toronto and Vancouver. These offices were primarily involved in advertising sales and providing technical support for the popular app. The decision comes after a thorough foreign investment review conducted by the government.
François-Philippe Champagne, the minister of industry, announced the closure, although the precise reasons behind the government’s action remain somewhat unclear. At a subsequent news conference, Mr. Champagne consistently emphasized that Canada is not prohibiting Canadians from using the app itself. It is worth noting that the government had previously banned TikTok’s usage on devices issued to government employees.
In the official announcement, it was stated that the decision to shutter TikTok’s operations was made following “rigorous scrutiny by Canada’s national security and intelligence community.” However, citing security regulations, Mr. Champagne refrained from disclosing specific findings from the review.
When questioned at the news conference about the rationale behind allowing Canadians to continue using TikTok despite the apparent security risks, Mr. Champagne sidestepped the inquiry, attributing his lack of response to legal constraints. He clarified that his authority is limited to reviewing and either approving or rejecting foreign investments in Canada, indicating that the regulation of apps falls outside his jurisdiction.
