Bruce Springsteen: The Heart and Soul of Rock ‘n’ Roll

While Lou Reed famously proclaimed that rock ’n’ roll could save one’s life, it is Bruce Springsteen who truly personifies this sentiment. It may seem contradictory to suggest that an artist can transcend the very genre they represent, yet as of now, Springsteen stands as the greatest living entertainer in the world—no contest.

“Road Diary,” a compelling new documentary crafted by director Thom Zimny, offers vibrant testament to this assertion. The film’s full title, “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” highlights the ensemble that has accompanied Springsteen on his remarkable journey, with many members having joined him right out of their teenage years.

Among the colorful personalities featured in the documentary is Steven Van Zandt, a musician and actor known for his role in “The Sopranos.” He serves as one of the film’s most engaging talking heads, effortlessly sharing amusing anecdotes that capture the spirit of their adventures together.

Beyond the humorous tales, the documentary delves deeper into Springsteen’s profound artistic mission. He passionately sings about the elements that give life its richness: friendship, love, community, and the pursuit of a higher purpose. In stark contrast to Frank Sinatra, who appeared jaded during his Diamond Jubilee World Tour at the age of 75, Springsteen radiates enthusiasm and commitment. Having just celebrated his own 75th birthday, he never exhibits a hint of boredom—he is, quite simply, a man on a mission.

The tour showcased in this film is still very much alive, with Springsteen set to perform in Montreal next week. One of the film’s standout moments encapsulates this relentless drive, as Springsteen exuberantly quotes his early influence, Van Morrison. On his way to yet another stage, he joyfully declares, “It’s too late to stop now.”
