American Binance Employee Released from Nigerian Custody
After enduring eight challenging months in custody in Nigeria, Tigran Gambaryan, an American compliance officer for the cryptocurrency giant Binance, is finally returning home. His case had sparked considerable tension between the United States and Nigeria, one of Africa’s most influential nations. Mr. Gambaryan’s ordeal stemmed from money-laundering allegations linked to a broader crackdown by the Nigerian government on cryptocurrency operations within its borders.
On Thursday, a specially equipped medical aircraft departed from Abuja, the capital of Nigeria, to safely transport him back to the United States. Throughout his detention, Mr. Gambaryan faced significant health challenges, contracting both malaria and double pneumonia, in addition to suffering from a herniated disk.
His release was the result of extensive diplomatic negotiations and pressure from U.S. officials, who advocated for his well-being and sought to foster a stronger partnership with Nigeria, particularly in the realm of cybercrime investigations. This collaboration is seen as crucial, especially given the rising frustration among Nigerian authorities regarding Binance and other cryptocurrency firms, as they grapple with an ongoing economic crisis.
Mr. Gambaryan had arrived in Nigeria just days prior to his arrest in February, initially being placed in a government-owned guesthouse. However, his circumstances worsened when he was transferred to the notorious Kuje prison in April, which is known for its harsh conditions.
