Aitana Sánchez Gijón has been awarded the prestigious Goya of Honour for 2025, the highest accolade bestowed by the Spanish Film Academy. This esteemed recognition will be presented during the gala of the 39th Goya Awards, scheduled to take place on 8 February in the vibrant city of Granada.

The actress expressed her astonishment at receiving this esteemed honor, reflecting on her belief that she was still too “young” to be awarded such recognition. However, she emphasized her gratitude, noting that she had no intention of declining the accolade.

Sánchez Gijón boasts a remarkable career spanning film, theatre, and television. Although she was born in Rome, her Spanish heritage is strong, thanks to her father, and her professional journey has predominantly unfolded in Spain. Her career took off in the 1980s, and she quickly became one of the most celebrated figures in the Spanish artistic landscape.

Her cinematic debut was with the film ‘Romanza final’, but it was in the 1990s that she truly captured the limelight with standout performances in notable films such as ‘Boca a boca’, directed by Manuel Gómez Pereira, and ‘La camarera del Titanic’, helmed by Bigas Luna. These roles significantly enhanced her visibility, not just in Spain, but on international platforms as well.

International Projection

One of the pivotal moments in her illustrious career was her role in ‘A Walk in the Clouds’ (1995), a Hollywood production where she starred alongside the renowned Keanu Reeves. This significant part marked her entry into international cinema and solidified her reputation as a versatile and accomplished actress.

In 1998, she made history by becoming the youngest ever president of the Spanish Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and notably, the first woman to hold this prestigious position.
