Abu Dhabi to Welcome the Second Sphere Entertainment Complex

The excitement surrounding the launch of the world’s second Sphere is set to unfold in Abu Dhabi, following the grand opening of the first massive dome entertainment venue in Las Vegas in September 2023, which features a residency by the iconic rock band U2. This ambitious project is a collaboration between Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism and Sphere Entertainment Co., as they revealed plans for a new Sphere location in the Middle East late Tuesday.

As part of this agreement, Abu Dhabi will pay a franchise fee to Sphere Entertainment to utilize their innovative designs for constructing the second Sphere. The Abu Dhabi government will be responsible for funding the construction of the venue, along with annual fees to Sphere Entertainment for creative and artistic content. However, the announcement did not disclose any financial details, nor did it specify the exact location within the Emirati capital where the Sphere will be built. The timeline for construction and the opening date for the new venue remain unannounced.

Abu Dhabi to Launch Second Sphere Entertainment Complex Following Las Vegas Success

The opening night of the Las Vegas Sphere, featuring U2’s spectacular “UV Achtung Baby” show, took place on September 29, 2023, and attracted significant attention.

The Sphere is the multi-billion dollar vision of James Dolan, the executive chair of Madison Square Garden and the owner of the renowned New York Knicks and Rangers. The colossal $2.3 billion Sphere in Las Vegas is celebrated as the most expensive entertainment venue in the gambling capital. It boasts a stunning high-resolution LED screen that wraps around half of the 17,500-seat audience area, hosting a variety of events, including concerts, film screenings, and sporting competitions within the world’s largest spherical structure, which stands at an impressive height of 111 meters and spans 157 meters in width.

Despite the ambitious plans for a second Sphere abroad, the journey has not been without its challenges. Last year, London Mayor Sadiq Khan rejected a proposal to establish a Sphere in the eastern part of the city due to a multitude of concerns, including the potential for light pollution. The proposed venue faced significant pushback from residents in the vicinity, with the London Assembly Environment Committee highlighting worries about the excessive light levels that would emanate from the Sphere, which is projected to feature around 1 million LED light bulbs on its exterior.

As Abu Dhabi endeavors to carve out its own unique identity as a travel destination, separate from its neighbor Dubai within the energy-rich federation of seven sheikhdoms on the Arabian Peninsula, the stakes are high. On the financial front, Sphere Entertainment’s stock saw a notable increase of more than 6% on the New York Stock Exchange, closing at $48.91 a share. This surge comes on the heels of a downgrade by Benchmark last month, which classified Sphere Entertainment as a “sell” due to concerns regarding the Sphere’s “scalability, high production costs, and a potentially underwhelming profitability outlook.”

In a recent report, we noted that the Sphere incurred significant losses. The MSG Sphere reported a staggering loss of $98.4 million (approximately €92.2 million) for the financial quarter ending September 30, 2023, just a day after the venue opened its doors on the Las Vegas Strip. This financial setback was disclosed shortly after Gautam Ranj resigned from his position as Sphere Entertainment’s chief financial officer, as indicated in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
